E-MAIL SHORTHAND FOR INSTANT MESSAGE USERS

Instant-Message acronyms (e-mail shorthand) were popularized by teenagers as they chatted with friends over AOL's Instant Message (AIM) software. Participants of Instant-Message sessions began to use and expand their vocabulary of e-mail abbreviations to speed and simplify communication.

UROK Learning Institute has found that these Instant- Message acronyms can be used to demonstrate to parents the frustration their children feel when they cannot read certain words and thus cannot understand what is presented in their schoolbooks. For example, try reading the following:

AAMOF, many poor readers POAHF when they really feel like HHIS.

Translation:
As a matter of fact, many poor readers put on a happy face when they really feel like hanging (their) head in shame.

If you don't understand the acronyms, you can't comprehend the sentence. In addition to helping you understand your children's frustrations with reading, familiarity with the acronyms can help you keep in touch with the student culture. It's also just a fun way to communicate. Attached is one of the most complete lists of Instant-Message acronyms available anywhere.
