UROK LEARNING INSTITUTE LAUNCHES READING CLINIC IN THE SOUTH BAY TO HELP AT-RISK STUDENTS

Partnership with Sweetwater school district first of its kind

San Diego, California - September 26, 2002 - UROK Learning Institute, an education company with a proven reading intervention program, has been awarded a contract to establish a reading clinic at the MAAC Community Charter School in Chula Vista in the Sweetwater Union High School District. The school targets at-risk students in grades 9-12, many of whom are English-language learners.

“A large percentage of our students are reading below grade level,” said MAAC School Chief Educational Officer Craig Frederickson. “We selected UROK because of its credentials and the quality of its program.”

The UROK reading intervention program, Literacy Links, is the core program that is being implemented at the new clinic. Based on the internationally recognized work conducted at Calgary Academy, the largest private learning disabilities school in North America and developed by inlets™, Literacy Links is a research-based, phonemic-awareness program clinically proven to dramatically improve reading for children and adults. Documentation shows that students completing the program, even those in the lowest performing schools, advance one to two grade levels (or more) in as little as 30 hours. UROK is the only authorized provider of Literacy Links in the United States.

“Reading skills are fundamental to success in every area of life,” said Susan Wolking, Executive Director of the Girard Foundation. “The UROK program could be a turning point for these kids.”

During the first year, the UROK clinic at the MAAC Charter School will provide Literacy Links to 60 students with reading difficulties. The Girard Foundation in La Jolla, California, has provided major funding for the services, as well as for an evaluation of the program’s effectiveness.

“The National Assessment of Educational Progress found that nearly 40 percent of the nation’s fourth graders were not reading at basic grade level,” said Alex Urbano, president, UROK Learning Institute. “Our goal is to provide a successful result orientated, cost effective, collaborative approach to dealing with at-risk students facing the challenge of reading difficulties. We could not be more pleased with this partnership and know this clinic will be the first of many in the community.”

UROK Learning Institute is an educational research, products and services company with primary emphasis on a highly effective, research-based, reading intervention program.
